The real reason I think this story is coming up now though is that Kobe was important to Batman. Recall that Kobe then wore a black mask on 3/6/2012 and the articles joked about him looking like a crime fighter and Batman...

3/6/2012 was also Shaq's bday and recall that Shaq wore the number 34 when he played with Kobe...and Kobe died 41 days before Shaq's bday at the age of 41.
